You Don’t Need Any Experience

I can already see all the people raising their hands in objection or thinking to themselves “Yeah right!”.

But think about it.

Nobody is born with an intrinsic skill.

People may have a talent for certain things, but most of us are born without any particular professional skill.

As we live our lives we begin to acquire skills in specific fields of knowledge and keep building on those until we eventually end up in a job in some company.

And if we’re good at that, we might eventually call ourselves experts in that particular field.

But in the end it’s nothing but a wealth of acquired knowledge.

Even the random stuff, like how to start a t shirt business.

Some of greatest entrepreneurs of our time entered into markets which they didn’t know anything about and were still successful:

  • Richard Branson created dozens of businesses, including an airline, a softdrink and even space tourism. I doubt he knew anything about them before he started.
  • Tim Ferris started a food supplements company without ever being involved in that industry before.
  • Pat Flynn went from being laid off to becoming an expert in the field of passive income generation in the online space.
These successful t shirt entrepreneurs entered markets which they knew nothing about.

What I’m trying to explain to you is that you can learn just about anything if you put your mind to it and take action.

Because only learning won’t get you far. You also need to take action.

And once you get your business off the ground, you can hire people to help you build that business even further.

You Don’t Need Any Designer Skills

Yep, that’s right.

You need absolutely ZERO designer skills in order to start you own t-shirt business.

Sounds counterintuitive? Maybe.

And yes, I will admit that if you have designer skills it may make things a bit easier for you.

It could possibly give you a few more options on how to set up a tshirt business.

However, trust me when I tell you that designer skills are pretty much the last thing you need when building a t-shirt business.

But why is that?

Well, one would think that being a great designer is the foundation for building a t-shirt business, but that’s not true.

Some of the most successful t-shirt businesses are run by people who have little to no designer skills at all.

When they decided to start a t shirt business I couldn’t draw at all.

I challenge you to browse the internet for some of the big sites which sell printed t-shirts for no more than $10.

A lot of them only have simple quotes which aren’t even particular original.

Great designs? Not really.

Do they sell well? Sure as hell they do!

“Have no fear of perfection — you’ll never reach it.”

Salvador Dali

You see, one of the biggest obstacles for people with a higher sense of aesthetic and design are their own standards.

A lot designers will only sell t-shirts which they think are creative and which look good.

However, fact of the matter is that most people have a pretty bad sense of taste when it comes to t-shirts or fashion in general.

Now you’re probably thinking: “Hey, wait a minute. I want to sell beautiful design and create a great brand!”.

That’s nice, but what good is that if no one is going to buy your t-shirts?

Do you want to start a t shirt business to look good or to make money?

Yes, there are exceptions to the rule and they are also the most prominently visible ones.

And that is why many t-shirt business owners have a distorted view on reality.

However, it is a fact that the majority of t-shirts sold on the internet are not particularly pretty.

Now, irrespective of whether or not you’re willing to acknowledge that, there are more reasons why you don’t need to have any designer skills.

Many on-demand printing services allow you to set up an online shop with them for free (more on this later).

You see, the make it super easy to start a t shirt business.

They also give you access to a huge marketplace of designs which other (more talented) designers have made available.

These designers are paid commissions every time a t-shirt with their design is sold.

So in effect, you can use other designers’ skills to build your own business.

Once you’ve started earning a decent amount of money with your online shop, you can start thinking about expanding your business.

Perhaps you want to hire designers who will create designs exclusively for your shop?

I actually show you how to start a t shirt business with a quick an easy store in this article.

And you can use the skills of thousands of existing designers to build it.

I also explain to you on this blog how you can leverage the help of external designers, to create unique designs which only your own brand will sell.

You Don’t Need an Original or Innovative Idea

For years, every time I told people that I would like to start my own business, people would ask me what my special idea was.

And every time I would ask them: “Who ever said that I needed a special idea?

You see, some of the most successful businesses are actually nothing but a better or more focused imitation of something that already exists.

And the same is true for the t-shirt industry.

Most people are blinded by today’s big brands with their mainstream designs.

And when they hear that someone wants to start a t shirt business they often think of websites likes Threadless, Design by Humans or LaFraise.

Why? Well, because they turned the classic business model of the t-shirt business upside down.

And that’s great!

“It’s not about idea. It’s about making ideas happen.”

Scott Belsky

But let’s be honest here. It is tremendously difficult to compete with the established players in that space and it is even more EXPENSIVE.

And why is it so expensive?

Because everyone is competing for the same mainstream clients.

What they are doing may not seem like mainstream, but believe me, it’s mainstream.

Instead you should be focusing on a particular niche with much less competition and you should own it!

It is much easier to start a t shirt business in a particular niche where you are closer to the customer.

You get more immediate feedback and can create far more tailored advertising.

You’ll be spending less on advertising and you’ll be getting higher results.

At this point you’re probably thinking: “So how do I find a niche?”.

Well, let me put it this way.

Google knows just about everything nowadays and when identifying profitable niches, Google is your best friend.

By the way, The Heidorn Report can also help you identify the niches with the highest sales potential and realistic chances of beating the competition.

You Don’t Need Any (Or Only Little) Money

A lot of people say that you can build a business without investing some money at the beginning.

I know where they are coming from and they aren’t entirely wrong.

However, I believe that money doesn’t play a particularly important role in starting up the business.

Search Google for “how to start a tshirt business with no money“and you’ll get tons of results.

Money or let’s say capital starts getting more important once you want to start scaling your t shirt business.

At that point you are trying to leverage the maximum potential of the processes you have in place.

But when you simply want to start a t shirt business and test the waters in the t-shirt industry: You don’t need a single dime.

You don't need a lot of money to start a t shirt business. Mostly hard word will do.
You don’t need a lot of money to start a t shirt business. Mostly hard word will do.

Nowadays there are so many on-demand printing services.

You essentially don’t need to invest any capital in order to get you business running.

All the costs associated with producing the product you are selling will be deducted once you make that sale.

But until that time comes, you don’t have to pay anything.

And as I’ve pointed out earlier, you don’t even need to pay for the designs.

Thousands of skilled designers are offering their ready-made designs on a commission basis on platforms like Spreadshirt.

“But I have no money” is one of the biggest excuses you hear from people who are reluctant to take matters into their own hands.

When I decided to start a t shirt business I was still a student and didn’t invest a single cent.

All You Need Is the Right Mindset

I actually believe this is THE biggest differentiator when it comes to unsuccessful versus highly successful entrepreneurs.

It is all about having the right mindset.

People spend so much time searching for excuses why something may or may not be working.

They eventually forget that in order to be successful, you need to focus on taking action.

Starting anything requires action.

So if you want to start a t shirt business, action is the name of the game.

Don’t get me wrong. I know the feeling.

When it comes to actually getting something done, there is so much temptation around you.

It’s almost like you WANT to be distracted.

And we have ALL been guilty of this at some point.

Checking Facebook for the 20th time, reading your E-Mails, reorganizing the books on your bookshelf in alphabetical order or even cleaning up your room….

Suddenly they all seem like the most important things on earth.

And the same goes for learning.

“The secret of getting ahead is getting started.”

Mark Twain

I must have said it a hundred times already but I’ll say it again.

People spend hours, days, weeks or even months reading every single advise they can find on the internet.

They keep reading the same old blogs, trying to learn everything there is to know about marketing their business.

And guess what: They don’t take action.

They never actually start a t shirt business at all.

Why?

Because it take guts and focus to take action.

And it’s easier to procrastinate and look for excuses than actually applying the stuff they’ve learned.

I’d actually be willing to bet that more than 70% of the people who are reading this now will not take action afterwards.

That’s right. Many of you will NEVER start a t shirt business for real.

If you really want to get things done and make real progress, you’re going to have to learn to focus.

In order to be able to focus, you need to know exactly WHAT it is you want, WHY you want it and HOW you will get there.

Once you get to that point, you will be able to be more productive that you’ve ever been before.

Some Final Thoughts

It’s not easy to start a t shirt business. There is no such thing as fast money or the perfect plan to get rich quick.

It takes dedication, focus and perseverance.

However, if you can stick to these fundamental rules, you’re already doing much better than 95% of the world.

If you see it through, you too will succeed. I did!
